New SQE1 format

170 questions per FLK, sat in two sessions of 85 — from the January 2027 sitting.

Per the SRA announcement of 10 September 2026, each Functioning Legal Knowledge assessment (FLK1 and FLK2) drops from 180 to 170 single-best-answer questions, sat in two sessions of 85 — 340 questions across SQE1 instead of 360. The time allowed per session is unchanged at 2 hours 33 minutes, so the pace eases to about 1.8 minutes (108 seconds) per question. It applies to every candidate, first-time and re-sit, from the January 2027 sitting.

  • New: questions are grouped by session by subject (see the table below). Order within a session is still random.
  • Ethics and Professional Conduct can still be tested in every subject and session; the blueprint (share of questions per subject) is unchanged.
  • Tax is examined only within Business Law and Practice, Property Law and Practice and Wills — so it can appear in FLK1 Session 1 and in both FLK2 sessions.
  • Questions test the law as it stood on the law cut-off date for that sitting.
  • Our mock exams mirror the format: 85 questions = one session (153 minutes), 170 = a full FLK — with one-click presets for each session.
